Bright Network Language and Culture Award nomination

NU London | November 24, 2021

We are delighted to announce that Northeastern University London’s Hispanic Appreciation Society has been nominated for the Bright Network Society of the Year, Language and Culture Award!

Having only been formed a few months ago, the Hispanic Appreciation Society (HAS) is now delivering Northeastern University London’s first Community Project. Upon learning that most of the Northeastern University London’s cleaning staff were Hispanic and spoke very little English, the society started offering free English Language classes taught by the students themselves, to help staff improve their language skills and quality of life.

The Society of the Year Awards is a huge opportunity for societies to maximise the impact they are having on the community at their university by winning up to £2,000 in funding for their efforts.

Voting closes at 2pm on 1st December.

What is the Hispanic Appreciation Society?

The Hispanic Appreciation Society is a safe place in which people of all cultures can come together to appreciate each other’s differences and similarities. HAS seeks to build a wider understanding of the diverse and unique Hispanic cultures, whilst working towards the preservation, recognition, and celebration of Hispanic heritage, traditions, and innumerable contributions. HAS is a platform for celebration, learning, and reflection. Where our community can enjoy a variety of cultural, social, academic, and outreach activities that will enrich their experience at Northeastern. Its members are characterised by a sense of international-mindedness and service to the community, who seek to share their culture but also learn from others’. HAS not only seeks to share the celebrations of Hispanic cultures and communities but also wants to help them. Most recently we have been working within our local community teaching English to the Hispanic cleaning staff of the university and surrounding areas.
