How do apprenticeships work?

Apprenticeships are available to anyone over the age of 16, living in England and are available at intermediate, advanced, higher and degree levels.

All apprenticeships are genuine jobs so all apprentices earn a salary. You must be paid at least the national minimum apprenticeship wage and many employers pay significantly more.

Apprentices should work enough hours each week so that they can undertake sufficient, regular training and on-the-job activity.

As an apprentice you’ll:

be an employee earning a wage and getting holiday pay

work alongside experienced staff

gain job-specific skills

get time for training and study related to your role (at least 20% of your normal working hours)

Apprentices must be offered the same conditions as other employees working on similar grades or in similar roles, including, paid holidays, sick pay, and any benefits you offer e.g. childcare voucher schemes, coaching or mentoring etc.
