Course Overview

Mathematical Methods II is a mathematics course intended for those studying natural sciences, engineering, finance or economics. The course continues from Mathematical Methods I. The following topics are presented with scientific or economic applications: Further integration; approximation of functions; applications; vectors; Euclidean spaces.

Course Aims

This course aims to:

  • Provide a thorough grounding in the further techniques of integral calculus, function approximation, vectors and geometry.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

Knowledge and Understanding

K1a Demonstrate an understanding of integral calculus theory, function approximation and vector techniques.
K2a Demonstrate the ability to solve problems in applied settings.

Subject Specific Skills

S1a Apply a fundamental understanding of integral calculus, function approximation and vector algebra to case studies in science and/or economics.

Transferable and Professional Skills

T1a Use the analytical and algebraic techniques covered in the course in the consideration of more complex scientific and/or economic challenges, including engineering and/or finance.

Teaching and Learning

Teaching and learning strategies for this course will include:

A minimum of 36 contact hours, typically to include interactive group teaching, small group tutorials, and in-class presentations and exams.

Course information and supplementary materials are available on the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

Students will receive individualised developmental feedback on their work for this course.

Students are required to attend and participate in all the formal and timetabled sessions for this course. Students are also expected to manage their directed learning and independent study in support of the course.

Assessment

Formative

Students will be formatively assessed through in-class activities, including quizzes, and during office hours. Set homework exercises will be assigned regularly, and will be tested in the exams. Students are expected to keep up with the set exercises in order to prepare for the exams.

Formative assessments are ones that do not count towards the final grade but will provide students with developmental feedback.

Summative

AE Assessment Activity Weighting (%) Duration
1      Examination 30% 75 minutes
2 Written 10% 3 hours
3     Examination 60% 2 hours

Feedback

Students will receive feedback in a variety of ways: written (including via email correspondence); oral (within office hours or on an ad hoc basis) and indirectly through class discussion.

Feedback on examinations is provided through generic internal examiners’ reports and made available to students on the VLE. For all other summative assessment methods, feedback is made available to the student either via email, the VLE or another appropriate method.
