Synergy groups
Synergy Groups are staff-led communities built around shared identities or experiences. They host events such as guest speakers, film screenings, discussions, and networking opportunities – open to all students and staff. They exist to:
- Celebrate our diverse identities and lived experiences
- Provide professional development, networking, and mentorship opportunities for their members
- Provide advocacy and support to our university teams on matters related to the purpose of the group
- Where relevant, engage in the development of community and industry partnerships and support and draw upon education activities related to their mission
- Become a core part of the University fulfilling its core Belonging goals across teaching, research, professional departments, and student life
Our synergy groups
Ubuntu Black Network
The Ubuntu Black Network aims to support Belonging by facilitating a space where black members of our community and beyond are celebrated. All are welcomed to stand in solidarity, to learn and to connect with others.
Celebrate and explore the richness of Black experiences. Get in touch: ubuntu@northeastern.edu
All Faiths and None
The mission of AFaN is to provide an inclusive space for interfaith and non-religious dialogue, value reflection, and community-building. The group welcomes all staff and students—religious, spiritual, secular, or questioning—and aims to encourage respectful dialogue about values, purpose, and identity.
Our work supports the Belonging goal of increasing feelings of community, recognition, and inclusion. While still in the build-up phase, the AFaN group is helping to:
- Create safe, pluralistic spaces for meaningful dialogue across differences.
- Support student and staff wellbeing by engaging the spiritual and existential dimensions of belonging.
- Provide leadership opportunities, listening, and shared learning, especially for individuals from minority or underrepresented worldviews.
We are committed to our events and structure continuing to evolve in a collaborative and inclusive direction, aligned with Northeastern’s global Belonging priorities.
Open to everyone, whether part of a faith tradition or not — promoting interfaith understanding. Get in touch: hossein.dabbagh@nulondon.ac.uk or deborah.walker@nulondon.ac.uk
LGBTQ+ Network
Hosts events including the Trans Community Café and book readings. Get in touch: edmund.neill@nulondon.ac.uk or connect with the LGBTQ+ student society.
This Synergy Group marked its arrival through an exclusive screening of ‘Mars’, the short film inspired by Yungblud’s 2020 hit, and shortlisted in festivals across the UK, Europe, and US (including the Tribeca Film Festival in New York). The evening also provided opportunities for networking with one of the film’s producers, Stefan Demetriou, from Aldgate Films, ex Senior Vice-President at Universal Music. In February 2025, the group held an open mic evening in collaboration with Creative Writing with guest headliner Petra Palkovacsova.
Women’s Network
Offers mentoring and networking for staff, with events often open to students too. Get in touch: women@nulondon.ac.uk
The Women’s Network launch event in February 2024 was attended by sixty women drawn from all parts of our community. This event was followed by celebratory activities organised as part of International Women’s Day. The launch of the network catalysed imaginative suggestions related to skill sharing, mentoring, onboarding, leadership, childcare, and parenting issues. These community-led initiatives will help steer and inspire future inclusive projects.
