Biography

Brian Ball is Professor of Philosophy at Northeastern University London. He works in the theory of knowledge, as well as philosophy of mind, language, and artificial intelligence.


A Canadian-British dual citizen, he was educated at McGill University, then the University of Oxford, where he was subsequently a Lecturer at St Anne’s and then Balliol College.

Research

Professor Ball increasingly uses computational methods in his research, which has been supported by the Royal Society, the British Academy, and others.


His 2016 essay, ‘Knowledge, Safety, and Questions’ won the Philosophy South international essay prize.

Teaching

Professor Ball has teaching competency across a wide range of areas in philosophy, from aesthetics, to the history of philosophy, and the philosophy of mathematics – alongside the areas of his research expertise (above). He led the development of the MA in Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence, and engages in research-led teaching at undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels.
