Biography
Dr Brandi is an Assistant Professor in Data Science at Northeastern University – London, teaching courses in Data Science and Machine Learning and an Honorary Research Fellow at the Centre for Climate Finance & Investment at Imperial College London.
Dr Giuseppe Brandi has a deep passion for diving into data, identifying himself as a DataMetrician. His research centers on DataMetrics, a concept he defines as the intersection of Data Analytics, Statistical Learning, and Computational Science. Dr Brandi sees DataMetrics as lying between Data Science and Econometrics, where data is central but the cause-effect relationship is also crucial. Unlike traditional approaches, his analysis considers the broader environment (Finance, in his case) rather than merely optimizing algorithms for specific datasets, while avoiding imposing rigid theoretical models.
Dr Brandi’s approach can be summarized by the idea that “models should fit the data, not the other way around.” He believes in the importance of models but argues that they should be adapted to reflect the complexity of the data rather than forcing the data to conform to pre-existing models. While data is central to his analysis, he recognizes the value of conceptual models for making inferences and predictions.
His work spans various fields, including Climate Data Science, Complex Systems, Statistical Learning, Econometrics, and Quantitative Finance, reflecting his belief in the transversality of science and the value of interdisciplinary methodologies for extracting insights from data.
