Sustainability on campus
Northeastern University London is helping to transform how universities approach environmental responsibility through our comprehensive Sustainability Strategy and Carbon Reduction Plan. With an ambitious goal to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, we are continuously implementing innovative solutions that make sustainability an integral part of campus life.
Smart technology on display
Experience our groundbreaking Sustainability Live Tracker displayed throughout our campus, a real-time digital artwork that monitors our environmental progress using energy-efficient light code technology. Created in collaboration with Start-up Hub member RockBadger, this interactive artwork reflects real sustainability metrics while using less energy than a standard video file.
Recycling on campus
Effective recycling across our campus locations contributes directly to our Sustainability Strategy. Clear recycling systems operate throughout Devon House, One Portsoken, Marble Quay, and the Start-up Hub, making sustainable waste disposal straightforward and effective.
Our campus-wide recycling program supports both environmental responsibility and community standards, as set out in our Sustainability Strategy. When members of our community use designated recycling bins correctly, they are contributing to measurable reductions in our carbon footprint and helping maintain clean, professional spaces where everyone can study and collaborate effectively.
Recycling guidelines
- Locate clearly marked recycling bins available on every floor across all buildings
- Keep food waste and liquids separate from recyclable materials
- Ask facilities staff or check posted guidelines when uncertain about proper sorting
Consistently adopting these practices across our four campus buildings enables effective waste processing and support our broader sustainability strategy.
Comprehensive waste management
Our successful “Put Your Waste in the Right Place” campaign has transformed how we handle waste across campus. Comprehensive food recycling programmes operate in all buildings, with clear signage guiding proper sorting of everything from coffee grounds to dairy products. We’ve become the most waste-efficient organization in Devon House, with regular site visits to processing facilities ensuring our waste is properly handled.
Building-specific environmental features
Each campus building incorporates sustainability measures. Marble Quay, the Start-up Hub, and Devon House have undergone rigours decarbonisation planning that will significantly reduce our carbon footprint and help reach net-zero emissions for Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2030. The University’s most recent addition, One Portsoken, incorporates modern energy-efficient systems and will be incorporated into future sustainability strategies.
Water and energy conservation
Accessible filtered water taps throughout campus reduce single-use plastic bottles while providing hot and cold drinking water. Energy-efficient lighting, modern HVAC systems, and smart building technologies help minimize our environmental impact across all locations.
Sustainable transportation support
With 32 showers available near bike storage areas (including fully wheelchair-accessible options), our campus actively supports sustainable commuting. Convenient access to multiple transport links encourages students and staff to choose environmentally friendly travel options.
Historic preservation meets modern sustainability
The Start-up Hub uniquely combines environmental responsibility with heritage conservation, featuring a preserved section of the original Roman London Wall alongside modern sustainable workspace design—demonstrating how historical preservation and environmental progress can coexist.
These initiatives and features create an environment where sustainability isn’t just taught but experienced daily, making environmental consciousness integral to campus life.
