Getting around London
London’s transport system includes buses, underground tube trains, overground rail, trams, and a river bus service. All of London’s public transport is run by Transport for London (TfL).
Buses
London’s iconic red buses are a great way to get around, and if you get a seat on the top deck offer the perfect position to see the sights of London! A Hopper fare gives you unlimited bus journeys for £1.75, made within one hour of touching in. Touch in using the same card or device on all journeys and you get the Hopper fare automatically.
Docklands Light Railway (DLR)
The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is London’s automated, driverless light rail system serving east and southeast London. Operating since 1987 with 45 stations across 38 kilometres of track, it connects key areas including Bank, Canary Wharf, Stratford, London City Airport, and Woolwich Arsenal. The closest station to our campus is Tower Gateway.
London Overground
The London Overground is London’s suburban rail network comprising six lines with distinct names and colours: Lioness (yellow), Mildmay (blue), Windrush (red), Weaver (purple), Suffragette (green), and Liberty (grey), connecting outer areas including Richmond, Camden, Stratford and Croydon. The closest station to our campus is Wapping, on the Windrush line.
Trams
London Trams, branded as Tramlink, is South London’s light rail network serving Croydon and surrounding areas. Operating since 2000, it’s the first tram system in London since 1952, with 39 stops along 28 kilometres of track connecting Wimbledon to Beckenham Junction, Elmers End and New Addington. Hopper fares are also available for £1.75.
Uber boat
The Thames Clipper River bus service stops at Tower Bridge, just a couple of minutes’ walk from our campus. Boats stop at 24 piers along the Thames between Barking Riverside Pier in the East and Putney Pier in the West. Services run from early in the morning until late at night, seven days a week.
Underground (the Tube)
London’s Underground, known as the Tube, is the world’s oldest subway system, connecting the city through 250 miles of track and 270 stations across eleven color-coded lines.
Our campus buildings are conveniently located near multiple Tube Lines including the Central, Circle, District, Elizabeth, Jubilee, DLR, and Northern. National Rail Overground trains into London Liverpool Street will bring you a few minutes’ walk through the City, or along the Thames to our campus. The closest stations are Aldgate, Aldgate East and Tower Hill.
Oyster card
All journeys done via TFL are paid either via Oyster card or pay-as-you-go. Oyster cards must be topped up with money before travel. There is no expiry date for funds on the card. Remember to have your payment card ready to tap in or out as you approach. This keeps passengers moving smoothly and avoids delays. 18+ Student Oyster Cards can save you 30% on travel cards and bus and tram season tickets.
Travel apps
CityMapper
A really handy app that you’ll find becomes your essential travel companion. Not only does it provide the best routes and methods of transport, it also gives live updates on prices journey times. Whether you want to walk, bike, bus, train or taxi to your destination CityMapper will get you from A to B.
TFL Go
The official Transport for London app gives you real-time information on the tube, DLR, Elizabeth Line, Thameslink and London Overground.
Trainline
Europe’s leading train and coach app. Get live train times, railcards, mobile tickets, e-tickets and seat selection.
Uber
book taxis and train tickets along with boat tickets for the Thames Clipper service.
Cycling in London
Cycling provides excellent benefits for both personal fitness and environmental sustainability, offering a low-carbon transport option that helps reduce London’s air pollution while providing cardiovascular exercise and improving overall health.
London’s cycle network
London offers an extensive cycling network with over 400km of cycle routes and protected bike lanes including the popular Cycle Superhighways and Quietways that connect key areas across the capital.
Bike rental
Lime bikes
Lime is an electric scooter and bike sharing app. Simply open the Lime app to find a vehicle near you, scan to unlock it, and enjoy your ride! The dockless system make it easier to get to and from your departure and arrival locations.
Santander Cycles
Santander Cycles is a public bicycle hire scheme in London. The scheme’s bicycles are popularly known as Boris Bikes, after Boris Johnson who was Mayor of London when the scheme began operating. Students aged 18 or over can save on the cost of annual membership. To get your discount, sign up with Student Beans.
Cycling safely
Safety remains paramount when cycling in London’s busy streets. While helmets aren’t legally required, they’re strongly recommended, along with high-visibility clothing and proper lighting during darker hours
All cyclists must follow the Highway Code for Cyclists which covers essential regulations including road positioning, signalling, and interaction with other road users. You can also check out the London Cycling Campaign.for more safety tips.
It goes without saying that you should plan your route in advance so you can keep your eyes up, and on your surroundings while you’re cycling.
Campus facilities for cyclists
Excellent facilities are available on Northeastern University London’s campus for cyclists. One Portsoken has internal bike parking spaces and Devon House also features secure bike storage within the perimeter, both also have shower facilities.
