About the Challenge
What is the AI Futures Challenge?
The AI Futures Challenge is a free, five-day online challenge where Year 12 students work in teams to solve real business challenges using AI tools. You’ll collaborate with a startup company, learn how AI is transforming the workplace, and develop practical skills that universities and employers value.
When does it take place?
The challenge runs from 16th –20th February 2026. All work is completed online, making it accessible from anywhere in the UK. The online pre-work will launch on the 9th February 2026.
Is there a cost to participate?
No, the AI Futures Challenge is completely free.
Do I have to attend in person?
No, the challenge will take place online.
Eligibility and Applications
Who can take part?
Students in their penultimate year of secondary education (equivalent to Year 12 in the UK). You can enter the challenge as a team or individually.
What’s the application deadline?
The deadline to register your interest is 8pm (GMT) Sunday 8th February 2026.
Do I have to enter as part of a team?
No, you’re welcome to apply and participate as an individual. If you’d prefer to work with people you already know, you can apply as a team of up to 3 students. All team members must complete the registration form.
What if I want to apply as a team but don’t have teammates yet?
Unfortunately, we’re unable to match individuals who want to form teams. If you want to apply as a team, you’ll need to organise this yourself with friends or classmates before starting the challenge.
Programme Structure
How much time do I need to commit?
The challenge spans five days, but you have complete flexibility in how much time you dedicate to your project. This isn’t an intensive, back-to-back programme – you can work at your own pace and fit the challenge around your other commitments. There will be some live sessions during challenge week but these will be recorded for you to watch back.
Is there work to do before the challenge starts?
Yes, there will be some pre-challenge work to help you get the most from the experience, this is completely optional. The link to join our online learning platform will be shared on the 9th February to all registered students.
Do I need to know about AI already?
No prior knowledge of AI is required. The challenge is designed to introduce you to AI concepts and tools, regardless of your starting point. Curiosity and willingness to learn are what matter most.
Will I receive a certificate?
Yes, all students who submit a project will receive a certificate of completion from Northeastern University London.
Technical Requirements
What equipment do I need?
You’ll need access to a stable internet connection.
Can I participate using just a tablet or phone?
While some activities may be possible on a tablet or phone, we recommend using a computer or laptop, if possible, to access all the necessary tools effectively.
Support
What if I need support during the challenge?
There will be opportunities to seek support throughout the pre-work and challenge week. For other further support or questions you can contact us on undergraduate.study@nulondon.ac.uk.
