Funding for home undergraduate students

Home students starting their first undergraduate degree may be eligible to apply for a tuition fee loan. To determine if you are entitled to a tuition fee loan, and how to apply, please visit gov.uk/student-finance. There are funding agencies in the U.K. for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, to which you should apply depending on your residency.

• Student Finance NI (for students from Northern Ireland)
• Student Awards Agency Scotland (for students from Scotland)
• Student Finance Wales (For students from Wales)

Students who are resident and settled in England may be eligible for a maintenance loan from the Student Loans Company. The amount of loan you receive will vary according to your household income. You can use your loan to pay for accommodation and living costs such as transportation and food.

The Northeastern University London Bursary provides funding of between £2,500 and £5,000 per year to undergraduate degree students with household incomes under £63,500, dependent upon their circumstances.

Means-tested bursaries

The Northeastern University London Bursary is a means-tested award for undergraduate students with home fee status and household incomes under £63,500.

• students with household incomes below £31,250 receive £3,750 annually.
• students with household incomes between £31,251 and £63,500 receive £2,500 annually.

Additional bursary funding

Additional funding is available to students in certain circumstances.

• students who can evidence that they are permanently estranged from their parents, or have been young carers, care-experienced students, or refugees receive an extra £1,250.
• Students with childcare responsibilities for under-18’s receive an additional £500.

The Northeastern University London Bursary is disbursed in two equal installments that are paid in the first week of the autumn and spring semesters. The bursary can be applied as a reduction in tuition fees, housing costs, or paid as a bank transfer in GBP.

What is the Career Launch Bursary?

The Career Launch Bursary provides financial support of up to £200 per student per academic year. Whether you’re heading to an interview, starting an internship, or preparing for your first professional role, this bursary can help cover the essential costs that come with taking the next step in your career.

Who is eligible?

You can apply for the Career Launch Bursary if you are:

• A Year 2 or 3 undergraduate student at Northeastern University London
• In receipt of the NU London Bursary this academic year
• Actively seeking employment, internships, or graduate opportunities
• Engaged with the Careers team (you’ll need to complete some simple preparation steps outlined below)

What can the bursary cover?

The bursary can be used for costs related to attending interviews and securing employment, including:

• Business attire – Professional clothing for interviews and workplace settings
• Travel to interviews – Train, bus, or other transport costs
• Meals during interviews – Light refreshments on interview days
• DBS checks – If you’re required to pay for background checks
• Internship-related costs – Essential expenses for starting a placement
• Final year employment preparation – Costs associated with transitioning into graduate roles

Need funds upfront?

We understand that sometimes you need to book travel or purchase items before you’ve been reimbursed. If paying upfront would be financially challenging for you, upfront payment options are available. Just let us know when you apply, and we’ll work with you to arrange this.

How to apply

Step 1: Prepare with the Careers team

Before applying, you’ll need to engage with our Careers services to ensure you’re fully prepared for success. This includes:

• Attending a one-to-one careers appointment
• Having your CV reviewed and approved
• Completing any relevant interview preparation or training

These sessions are designed to give you the skills and confidence to make the most of every opportunity.

Step 2: Submit your application

Once you’ve completed the preparation steps and have an upcoming interview or employment-related expense, you can apply through this form.

Step 3: Assessment

Your application will be reviewed jointly by the Careers and Financial Student Aid teams to ensure you meet both the financial and careers engagement criteria.

Step 4: Receive your bursary

If approved, you’ll receive your bursary payment and can focus on impressing at your interview or starting your new opportunity!
