Funding for home undergraduate students


Tuition fee loans for home undergraduate degree students

Home students starting their first undergraduate degree may be eligible to apply for a tuition fee loan. To determine if you are entitled to a tuition fee loan, and how to apply, please visit gov.uk/student-finance. There are funding agencies in the U.K. for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, to which you should apply depending on your residency.

Maintenance loans for home students

Students who are resident and settled in England may be eligible for a maintenance loan from the Student Loans Company. The amount of loan you receive will vary according to your household income. You can use your loan to pay for accommodation and living costs such as transportation and food.

Financial support for undergraduate students

Northeastern University London offers two bursary awards for eligible undergraduate home fee students. Which bursary you are eligible for depends on your personal circumstances.

  • The NU London Bursary is a means-tested award based on your household income.
  • The Priority Groups Bursary is available to students from specific backgrounds, regardless of household income.


Students may only receive one on these bursaries per year.


The Northeastern University London Bursary

The Northeastern University London Bursary provides funding of between £2,600 and £3,900 per year to undergraduate degree students with household incomes under £66,000.

Students who are care-experienced, estranged, young carers, or refugees may be eligible for the Priority Groups Bursary instead, please see below.


Means-tested bursaries


The Northeastern University London Bursary is a means-tested award for undergraduate students with home fee status and household incomes under £66,000.

  • Students with household incomes below £33,000 receive £3,900 annually.
  • Students with household incomes between £33,000 and £66,000 receive £2,600 annually.


Additional bursary funding


Students with childcare responsibilities for dependants under 18 may be eligible for an additional one-off payment of £500.

The Northeastern University London Bursary is disbursed in two equal instalments, paid in the first week of the autumn and spring semesters. The bursary can be applied as a reduction in tuition fees or paid as a bank transfer in GBP.

Students should ensure they have read the Northeastern University London Bursary Policy before submitting their application, in order that they clearly understand evidencing requirements.

Students with questions regarding eligibility or evidence requirements are encouraged to reach out to the Northeastern University London Bursary team via bursary@nulondon.ac.uk prior to submitting a finished application.



The Priority Groups Bursary

The Priority Groups Bursary provides funding of £5,500 per year to eligible undergraduate students whose personal circumstances are likely to have an ongoing impact on their studies and student experience. Unlike the NU London Bursary, this award is not means-tested.

Who is eligible?

The Priority Groups Bursary is available to undergraduate students with home fee status who belong to one or more of the following groups:

  • Students who are estranged from their parents or guardians, aged under 25
  • Students who are care-experienced (including those who have been in foster care, kinship care, or under a special guardianship arrangement), aged under 25
  • Students who are young carers or young adult carers, aged under 25
  • Students who hold refugee status, are asylum seekers, or have been granted leave following an asylum or human rights application

Eligibility for the Priority Groups Bursary is assessed based on information provided in your application to Northeastern University London. Eligible students will be contacted by the Widening Participation team with details of how to apply. Additional financial support

As well as our bursary awards, Northeastern University London offers additional financial support to help students with the costs of career development and professional experience.

Internship Bursary

We know it can be tough to find paid internships in certain industries. We have four bursaries available to 1st and/or 2nd year students who have secured an unpaid summer internship.


The scheme opens on the first Monday of March each year, and applications close on the first Monday of July each year. Bursaries are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Stipulations apply and details can be found in the guidance below.

We know that preparing for graduate employment can come with costs – from travel to interviews to professional attire. Northeastern University London’s Career Launch Bursary is here to help remove financial barriers so students can focus on showcasing talents and securing opportunities.


What is the Career Launch Bursary?


The Career Launch Bursary provides financial support of up to £200 per student per academic year. Whether you’re heading to an interview, starting an internship, or preparing for your first professional role, this bursary can help cover the essential costs that come with taking the next step in your career.


Who is eligible?


You can apply for the Career Launch Bursary if you are:

  • A Year 2 or 3 undergraduate student at Northeastern University London
  • In receipt of the NU London Bursary this academic year
  • Actively seeking employment, internships, or graduate opportunities
  • Engaged with the Careers team (you’ll need to complete some simple preparation steps outlined below)


What can the bursary cover?


The bursary can be used for costs related to attending interviews and securing employment, including:

  • Business attire – Professional clothing for interviews and workplace settings
  • Travel to interviews – Train, bus, or other transport costs
  • Meals during interviews – Light refreshments on interview days
  • DBS checks – If you’re required to pay for background checks
  • Internship-related costs – Essential expenses for starting a placement
  • Final year employment preparation – Costs associated with transitioning into graduate roles


Need funds upfront?


We understand that sometimes you need to book travel or purchase items before you’ve been reimbursed. If paying upfront would be financially challenging for you, upfront payment options are available. Just let us know when you apply, and we’ll work with you to arrange this.


How to apply


Step 1: Prepare with the Careers team

Before applying, you’ll need to engage with our Careers services to ensure you’re fully prepared for success. This includes:

  • Attending a one-to-one careers appointment
  • Having your CV reviewed and approved
  • Completing any relevant interview preparation or training

These sessions are designed to give you the skills and confidence to make the most of every opportunity.


Step 2: Submit your application

Once you’ve completed the preparation steps and have an upcoming interview or employment-related expense, you can apply through this form.


Step 3: Assessment

Your application will be reviewed jointly by the Careers and Financial Student Aid teams to ensure you meet both the financial and careers engagement criteria.


Step 4: Receive your bursary

If approved, you’ll receive your bursary payment and can focus on impressing at your interview or starting your new opportunity!
