Biography
Dr Balgiisa Sheik Ahmed is the Head of Law & Criminology at Northeastern University London and an Assistant Professor in Commercial Law. She holds a PhD in International Law from Aston University (2020), where her research focused on the International Labour Organisation’s role in organising informal workers in developing countries. She also holds an LLM in International Commercial Law from the University of Birmingham and an LLB in Law with Politics from Keele University.
Balgiisa’s research interests include labour law, international law, employment policy, and human rights.
She has presented her work at the Annual Society of Legal Scholars conference and has contributed to research on environmental law and policy in Somaliland as a Legal Researcher for the Centre for Frankincense Environmental and Social Studies (CFESS).
At Northeastern University London, Balgiisa teaches modules on Employment Law, Company Law, Criminal Law and Contract Law. She has held teaching positions in both the UK and East Africa. As College Ambassador, she facilitates collaboration between Northeastern University London and Northeastern’s global network, supporting teaching, research, and academic development.
Balgiisa was awarded the Faculty Recognition Prize 2024 for her contribution to the university and teaching excellence. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).
