NU London’s doctoral programmes offer PhD studentships in the humanities, social sciences and digital and computer sciences. These programmes are designed to advance interdisciplinary research at the forefront of these fields.
Students join an internationally connected research community and have access to faculty research seminars, conferences and training opportunities spanning all disciplines. Students are encouraged to engage with the wider world through internships and fellowships, and researcher development forms a structured and central part of the programme, aligned with leading frameworks including Vitae and GuildHE.
London offers unparalleled access to research institutions, industry partners, cultural diversity and intellectual life. Students also have the opportunity to connect with Northeastern’s global campus network as part of their London-based studies, adding an international dimension rarely found in UK doctoral training.
Research areas
Computer Science
Computer Science at Northeastern University London brings together researchers working across artificial intelligence, data science, quantum computing, software and systems, and computational theory. Anchored in one of the world’s leading technology cities and connected to Northeastern’s global university network, the discipline is defined by its commitment to societally relevant challenges, from agentic systems and human-machine interaction to large-scale data and infrastructure, alongside transatlantic collaboration and close ties with industry and practice.
Economics
Economics at NUL is characterised by methodological breadth and a strong commitment to policy-relevant research. Faculty expertise spans:
1). empirical macroeconomics and time-series econometrics, including work on equilibrium interest rates and monetary policy
2). behavioural and experimental economics examining how culture, institutions, and context shape decision-making
3). applied microeconomics and financial economics addressing food sustainability, the financial materiality of health, and investor action mechanisms for promoting health as an ESG issue.
English
The English, Creative and Academic Writing discipline encompasses research across literary criticism, theory, and creative practice. Researchers employ pioneering comparative methodologies in investigating connections between writing and the wider world. Particular strengths include the study of writing and cultural diversity, material culture, and place, including London’s globally diverse literary history.
History
History and Art History at Northeastern University London focuses on a wide range of subjects from the medieval Crusades to modern fascism, from ancient Byzantium to modern conservatism. We also have considerable expertise in digital humanities and mapping techniques, and specialize in research that links past events to current real-world problems.
Current PhD students are studying a variety of topics from later medieval Doom paintings to eighteenth century crime in Britain, and we welcome potential students studying topics from the late Roman Empire to the present day.
Network Science
The Network Science Institute’s London hub was established in 2022 as the university’s European centre of the fast-growing research field. The institute’s world-leading researchers in London focus on scaling network science research globally, particularly in human health and global security.
Philosophy
Philosophy has been the heart of our institution since its foundation. Philosophy researchers at NU London produce rigorous, interdisciplinary, research with real-world relevance. We have particular strengths in computational philosophy (see our lab here), social epistemology, and the history of philosophy.
Politics and IR
The Politics, International Relations Discipline at Northeastern University London sits at the intersection of rigorous social science and a holistic approach to the study of politics by focusing on the world’s most relevant policy debates. Located in the heart of London, steps from the Houses of Parliament, The City of London, and the United Nations International Maritime Organisation, colleagues across the Discipline bring expertise spanning political theory, international security, cyber-governance, regional studies (from Latin America to East Asia and Europe), and emerging global challenges.
